Understand the pattern

Input tokens and reserved output share a context budget. Check the combined planned use rather than comparing the prompt alone with the limit.

Interpret the evidence

Reduce the input or reserved output because 7200 + 2048 exceeds 8192.

A tempting mistake

The request fits because the prompt alone is below 8192.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-models-runtimes-007.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "input_tokens": 7200,
  "reserved_output_tokens": 2048,
  "context_limit": 8192,
  "fits": false
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .fits /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-models-runtimes-007.json
false

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'reduce-context-use' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-models-runtimes-007-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “reduce-context-use” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Read context limits” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “The request fits because the prompt alone is below 8192.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.
