Understand the pattern

An index status must be read with document counts and readiness. A process being up does not guarantee that the index contains the expected records.

Interpret the evidence

Investigate the missing chunks before marking the index ready.

A tempting mistake

Process liveness proves every chunk is indexed.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-005.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "process_alive": true,
  "expected_chunks": 842,
  "indexed_chunks": 512,
  "ready": false
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .indexed_chunks /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-005.json
512

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'wait-for-index-completion' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-005-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “wait-for-index-completion” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Inspect index status” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Process liveness proves every chunk is indexed.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Read embedding metadataEmbeddings have a model identity and dimension contract. Query and document vectors must use a compatible embedding setup; equal storage format alone is not enough.Practice
  2. 02Check index freshnessFreshness compares the indexed revision with the source revision or update watermark. Wall-clock uptime does not establish that new documents were ingested.Practice
  3. 03Review retrieval resultsRetrieval results should be judged for relevance, coverage and source quality. A ranking position is not a guarantee that a passage supports the answer.Practice
