Read embedding metadata

Embeddings have a model identity and dimension contract. Query and document vectors must use a compatible embedding setup; equal storage format alone is not enough.

Understand the pattern

Embeddings have a model identity and dimension contract. Query and document vectors must use a compatible embedding setup; equal storage format alone is not enough.

Interpret the evidence

Align query and document embedding models before comparing similarities.

A tempting mistake

Equal dimensions make all embedding models interchangeable.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-004.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "document_model": "embed-a",
  "query_model": "embed-b",
  "same_dimensions": true,
  "compatible_space": false
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .compatible_space /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-004.json
false

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'align-embedding-model' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-retrieval-embeddings-004-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “align-embedding-model” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Read embedding metadata” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Equal dimensions make all embedding models interchangeable.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Review chunk boundariesChunk boundaries should preserve enough local context to interpret a passage. Separating a condition from its exception can change the meaning of the retrieved evidence.Practice
  2. 02Inspect index statusAn index status must be read with document counts and readiness. A process being up does not guarantee that the index contains the expected records.Practice
  3. 03Check index freshnessFreshness compares the indexed revision with the source revision or update watermark. Wall-clock uptime does not establish that new documents were ingested.Practice
