Recognize probabilistic output

A probabilistic system can return different valid wording for the same task. Compare task quality over repeated cases rather than demanding identical strings when exact wording is not a requirement.

Understand the pattern

A probabilistic system can return different valid wording for the same task. Compare task quality over repeated cases rather than demanding identical strings when exact wording is not a requirement.

Interpret the evidence

Evaluate whether both responses satisfy the task rather than treating different wording alone as a failure.

A tempting mistake

Any difference in wording proves corruption.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-systems-foundations-008.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "same_input": true,
  "responses": [
    "The file is missing.",
    "The requested file was not found."
  ],
  "same_meaning": true
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .same_meaning /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-systems-foundations-008.json
true

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'evaluate-task-success' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-systems-foundations-008-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “evaluate-task-success” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Recognize probabilistic output” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Any difference in wording proves corruption.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Identify deterministic componentsApplication arithmetic, validation and routing can be deterministic even when text generation is variable. Keep hard constraints in code instead of trusting generated prose to enforce them.Practice
  2. 02Separate data and instructionsRetrieved documents are data, not trusted instructions. Keep the application policy separate and do not let a quoted document authorize tools or change the user task.Practice
  3. 03Locate an operational failureLocate the first boundary that failed. An HTTP request rejected by a gateway has not necessarily reached the model, so inspect the gateway error before changing generation parameters.Practice
