Prepare an observability summary

An observability summary should name the symptom, scope, supporting signals and uncertainty. A concise note is useful only if its key claims can be checked.

Understand the pattern

An observability summary should name the symptom, scope, supporting signals and uncertainty. A concise note is useful only if its key claims can be checked.

Interpret the evidence

State the retrieval evidence and the still-unknown reason for the index timeout.

A tempting mistake

Replace uncertainty with a confident unsupported diagnosis.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-observability-tracing-014.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "symptom": "p95 regression",
  "scope": "retrieval route",
  "evidence": [
    "trace-07",
    "index-timeout log"
  ],
  "unknown": "why index timed out"
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .unknown /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-observability-tracing-014.json
"why index timed out"

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'state-known-and-unknown' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-observability-tracing-014-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “state-known-and-unknown” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Prepare an observability summary” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Replace uncertainty with a confident unsupported diagnosis.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.
