Reason about timeouts

Timeouts must identify which layer stopped waiting. If the client deadline is shorter than normal server work, the client can time out while the server keeps processing.

Understand the pattern

Timeouts must identify which layer stopped waiting. If the client deadline is shorter than normal server work, the client can time out while the server keeps processing.

Interpret the evidence

Review the deadline and cancellation behavior; a timeout does not prove the server stopped.

A tempting mistake

Assume a client timeout cancels all server-side work.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-inference-apis-007.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "client_timeout_ms": 500,
  "observed_server_ms": 800,
  "server_cancel_confirmed": false
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .client_timeout_ms /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-inference-apis-007.json
500

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'review-deadline' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-inference-apis-007-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “review-deadline” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Reason about timeouts” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Assume a client timeout cancels all server-side work.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Distinguish client and server errorsClient and server status classes point to different boundaries. A malformed request calls for correction, while a transient server failure may warrant a bounded retry policy.Practice
  2. 02Review retry boundariesRetry policies need a maximum attempt count, delay and retryable failure set. Unbounded retries can amplify overload and duplicate work.Practice
  3. 03Inspect a request identifierA request identifier ties a client operation to gateway and runtime evidence. Record the identifier rather than copying the whole prompt into ordinary logs.Practice
