Understand the pattern

Precision and recall answer different questions. More retrieved items can improve recall while introducing irrelevant results; select the tradeoff for the actual task.

Interpret the evidence

Review precision because half the returned evidence is irrelevant to a short-list task.

A tempting mistake

High recall means every returned item is useful.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-evals-datasets-010.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "precision": 0.5,
  "recall": 0.95,
  "task": "short evidence list"
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .precision /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-evals-datasets-010.json
0.5

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'review-precision' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-evals-datasets-010-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “review-precision” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Review metric tradeoffs” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “High recall means every returned item is useful.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Set a release thresholdA release threshold should be chosen before looking at candidate results. Include critical failure bounds, not only a single average target.Practice
  2. 02Inspect a data sliceSlice evaluation checks behavior on a meaningful subset. Keep slice size with the score and avoid generalizing a small or unrepresentative slice to all traffic.Practice
  3. 03Find annotation disagreementAnnotation disagreement can reveal an ambiguous rubric rather than a model defect. Resolve the criterion and preserve adjudication notes before using the label as ground truth.Practice
