Understand the pattern

Fallback routing needs explicit eligibility and limits. A fallback must preserve task, privacy and compatibility boundaries rather than serving any response at any cost.

Interpret the evidence

Do not route sensitive work to the unapproved fallback.

A tempting mistake

Any available fallback is acceptable during an outage.

All names, measurements, prices, versions, and thresholds in this exercise are fictional training data. The evidence supports this bounded scenario, not a claim about a live provider.

Worked example and expected result
$ cat /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-cost-reliability-009.json
{
  "fixture": "Fictional training data; not a live measurement.",
  "primary_unavailable": true,
  "fallback_quality_pass": true,
  "fallback_privacy_approved": false
}

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ jq .fallback_privacy_approved /opt/ai-lab/cases/aiops-cost-reliability-009.json
false

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

$ printf '%s\n' 'withhold-unapproved-fallback' > /home/learner/lab/aiops-cost-reliability-009-decision.txt
(no output; exit 0)

Exit status: 0. The command completed successfully in the training fixture.

Try a variation

Name the assumption that would have to change for “withhold-unapproved-fallback” to stop being the justified action. Do not silently replace missing evidence with a guess.

Explain it

What does the evidence in “Review fallback routing” justify?

Apply it elsewhere

A colleague concludes: “Any available fallback is acceptable during an outage.” What should you do?

Keep the momentum.

Complete the lab, then explain and apply the pattern.

  1. 01Compare latency and costCost and latency tradeoffs must respect task quality and service targets. Choose among configurations that pass the required gates rather than optimizing a single metric.Practice
  2. 02Plan graceful degradationGraceful degradation retains a safe useful subset when dependencies fail. Make the reduced behavior explicit rather than pretending the full service is healthy.Practice
  3. 03Read reliability targetsReliability targets need a measure and window. Keep user-visible success separate from process uptime so an alive but unusable system is not counted as healthy.Practice
